everyday i'm buskin'

a few weeks ago, i randomly responded to an email from temple news (the student-run newspaper on campus) asking for pitches for their upcoming music issue. keep in mind, i've been getting these emails all semester and i never respond to them. and the one time i do choose to respond is when i'm already bogged down with a thousand other end-of-semester things to do. but i was in need of clips and i did have a few ideas so i shot the editor an email back and before i knew it, i was working on an article about street musicians (or buskers or griots- they all have different names for themselves depending on their background.) it's a feature article and you can read it here. (sidenote: it's a little clunky and they changed some of my wording so it's even worse, but my mom will still be proud. and that's all that matters, right? also: i've noticed i have a tendency to start writing news articles in a mock-y kind of way and the line between total silliness and serious stuff blurs. . .) all the dudes i interviewed for the article were ridiculously nice and into their music and stuff. the lovely christine (an experience journalist lady who i knew i could rely on to give me that extra push as i was freaking out about talking to strangers in the park) accompanied me and is picture lurking in the third picture. a nice juxtaposition- her blue sundress and their lack'o'soap. i'm a fan.

blood brothers

i was filming a scene for the student-run sketch show i'm involved in, temple smash. and had to walk home in a pant suit, with blood splattered across my face. a stark contrast to the regular thursday night party folk, decked out in glittery tunics for fornever12. also, i had borrowed my roommate's blouse and upon my arrival home, the following exchange occured:

me: hey alex- i think i got some blood on your shirt. it should come out- i'm really sorry though.
alex: don't worry about it. i only wear that shirt when i have job interviews.

because nothing seals the deal like a few blood stains. shows your committed. willing to get the job done right.

on repeat

the life aquatic studio sessions featuring seu jorge

beautiful acoustic versions of some of my favorite bowie jams. including this one, which has literally been on repeat since i bought the cd. it was weird too- i haven't bought a cd is so long. being a poor college kid, coupled with having access to friends music libraries has resulted in me forgoing the actual purchasing process. but FYE was having a clearance sale and it was half price and though i had only heard snippets of the songs at a friends house (and during the actual film), i just decided to buy it. totally. worth. it. a marriage of david bowie and wes anderson all sung in portuguese by a beautiful brazilian man? the life aquatic studio sessions completes me, completely.

a few of my favorite things

favorites from my closet:
1. print by james dunn.
2. dress from salvation army that could possibly be from anthropologie. had a few simple tears when i bought it, but thanks to my sewing machine it's good as new.
3. floral blouse from a philly thrift store. purchased along with a hummingbird mug.
4. marching band-esque jacket. first worn to rocky horror. now worn when i'm feelin' flashy.
5. black dress from avalon consignment in pittsburgh; originally from target. purchased last summer when liz, anna, and i went to visit eric. we got cupcakes and made lasagna and sat in the park being devoured by bugs.
6. the dress i made when i was really excited to go home. i don't know why i was so pumped; i just was. the fabric is from the west shore salvation army and i almost didn't buy it but matt talked me into it. it's now one of my favorite dresses.

my diet as of recent has consisted mostly of candy. jellybeans, chocolate, skittles- whatever remains of my easter loot. it's just super fast and easy to grab some candy and run to class. last semester i was all about cooking and planning out my meals but this semester has been so ridonkulously busy that i'm eating all kinds of weird stuff. example: i had leftover easter ham and swedish fish for breakfast on friday. but yesterday i woke up and had the urge to actually make something. i found this recipe on closet cooking and sweet goddamn- it was delicious. ham and pineapple with sharp cheddar? yhuss puhleassseeee. i'm a sucker for warm pineapple. it was super tasty and only took like five minutes to make. in fact- i think i'm going to go make one right now. tonight we're having a home cooked meal at my friend beth's house but in the meantime one of these bad boys should tide me over . . .

like a giant marshmellow peep

this was my easter outfit. i always end up wearing very bizarre things when i'm home. and by bizarre, i mean not from target or kohls, which is the norm for most central Pennsylvanians. i think it might have to do with the fact that i feel kind of like a stranger when i go home now- like i can get away with wearing a canary yellow dress with t-strap shoes and a giant daisy pin. like no one knows me anymore, so no one cares. or i don't care if they care. it's kind of fun.

at one point the following conversation went down:
caitlin: hey grandpa
grandpa: caitlin chiffon! happy easter! you look like a daffodil!
caitlin: thank you . . . ?
grandpa: janet- do you see your granddaughter's dress? doesn't she look like a daffodil?
grandma: a what? no. not really. basketballs are normally orange.

love those folks. we had a nice quite easter. full of ham and cheese and baked pineapple and asparagus and watching an american in paris and playing with our new blow up dinosaur. the weather was beautiful as was the company. i've been eating easter candy as a substitute for normal meals the past few days. that's healthy right? (chocolate) eggs and (jelly) beans? definitely good for you.
