tea for ten

twas miss mercedes birthday this past week. she hosted a glorious tea party for us on saturday which pretty much turned into a giant eating feast (typical of our friends.) she made glorious little sandwiches and tasty flaky pastries with asparagus and mushrooms and good cheese. we also had scones and cake pops and ice cream cake and butter tarts. soooo goooodddd. matt was here visiting and after eating we passed out on the floor, in our dress up clothes with alice in wonderland playing in the background. and how about matt's bow tie? eh? pretty damn good right? especially considering we made it five minutes before the party. thank god he travels with suspenders in tow because that definitely completed the ensemble. we had a lovely visit- passed out on the couch friday night with cookbooks open and amelie on the tv. went to see part of the philagrafika exhibit which was cool (the guy who worked there got so sick of my complaining about the price he let us in fo' free- score!) we saw some cool shit then bounced over to anthro to drool over the displays. somewhere along the way we stopped at di bruno brothers and gorged ourselves on free cheese samples. overall- delightful visit from mista barry, delightful weekend.

i got to spend some time with my family this weekend. this is what we did.

drrtty south roadtrip: awesome in austin

austin was our final stop and by favorite city by far. we rolled up around eight on wednesday, walked along one of the main drags, went to a creepy side show thing (too scary for me- it was all supernatural freaky deaky things), saw a tranny hooker in our search for a motel, saw the capital, hung out at all the cool vintage shops along south congress (soco), and ate delicious food from trucks. we had these cone things for lunch with chilli-dusted fries; then corrie and i split a michael jackson whipper snapper (chocolate cupcake with cream cheese icing and a shot of whipped cream inside) and we all got ice cream (mexican vanilla!). for dinner we went to tony's taco truck and dear god. i would move to texas for those tacos. i had a marinated pork one with avocado and pineapple chunks. heavenly. we had an awesome view of the city as the sun was setting and we befriended a toothless fiddle player named willie who told us hilarious jokes and played the fiddle for us. we gave him a few bucks before we left which he told us he'd spend on beer. my kind of man. then we went to gourdoughs and my plan to move to austin was solidified. gourmet donuts made my adorable nerd boys in an airstream trailer- and there's toppings. i got brownie batter, fudge icing, and fudge-covered brownie pieces on mine. no words. too good. i actually kissed the donut on the trailer because i was so in love. it was the perfect end to our time in texas.

beyond that it's just a story of sweatpants, fast food, driving through the night, for long periods of time, in scary states- usual roadtrip stuff. it was completely worth all the time in the car. drrtty south roadtrip '10 was one for the books.

drrtty south roadtrip: darlin' dallas

so we last left off at the little rock walmart. after napping briefly in their parking lot, we made a pit stop at sonic and harassed a teenage employee, then drove five hours to dallas, slept another four hours in the dallas walmart parking lot, freshened up in walmart's bathroom, witnessed bizarre group stretching, went to the jfk sixth floor museum (another really good museum- it's actually on the sixth floor of the book depository where lee harvey oswald fired the shot), saw the grassy knoll, did some thrifting, went to dolly python (which has AMAAZZINNNGGG vintage finds but was a little too steep for our poor college pockets), and got delicious thai food. nice work dallas.
