shows i'm obsessed with: pushing daisies

i have no idea why but i've been obsessed with watching tv on dvd this summer. and by dvd i mean netflix instant play (because our dvd player sucks and where would i even find dvds in the first place? rental shacks are a dying breed.) i'll literally become obsessed with a show, blow off all social engagements, and watch hours upon hours of the show until i'm completely done with the series. it's putting a serious cramp in my productivity as a human being. dishes go unwashed, errands go unrun, and upset mothers go uncalled. because i've become a slave to a new set of characters and i just can't wait to see what happens to my friends. <---makes me sound like a crazy person. anyway, my most recent obsession has been with the short-lived (undeservedly so) abc sitcom pushing daisies. despite having won several thousand million emmys (7) and having critics gush all over it, it got the boot and left behind a mere 22 episodes. all of which i finished in a matter of two, very unproductive days (productive in the sense that i watched an entire television series, unproductive in the sense that i stayed in my pajamas all day and failed to shower/leave my apartment.) i am so in love with this series, it actually hurt me to finish it. it brought sadness that i felt in a physical way and i actually skipped dinner that night. that kind of intense love.

things i love about this show:
1. the costumes. dear god i swoon. everything is so colorful and floral and retro and if these dresses were actually in my possession they would be covered in drool. i was so in love with chuck's wardrobe that i ended up sewing two floral dresses while watching the show. even the dudes are wearing cool stuff- patterns and purple hues and dreamy suits. siiiggghhhhhhhh.
2. the pies. the main guy, ned, owns a pie shop and dear god are those pies lookin' fine. imma hafta bake me one asap.
3. it's kind of scooby-doo-esque. the gang gets together, there's a suspicious murder, they follow the clues, it's always the shady character who did it and viola! case closed! it appeals to the child in me who loved spending saturday mornings at six am curled on the couch with dad, eating peanut butter and egg sandwiches, and watching scooby. yet, it's gone beyond the basic scooby mold enough to satisfy my adult self. excellent work.
4. the world of the show. critics noted that the show had a tim burton feel and it kind of does- it's incredibly stylized and almost cartoonish at times. it has definite vintage inspiration but is still set in modern times. kind of amelie-ish but in a less yellow, making-me-want-to-throw-up-adorable kind of way.
5. the chuck and ned love story = adorable. and i'm not really one for mushy stuff but seriously. it's very sweet.
6. chuck's bangs. make me wish for a more angular face and less cowlicks.
7. kristen chenoweth. hilarious. love her character. love all the characters actually- but hers is just so endearing. she breaks out into random songs and is just very human. and hysterical.
8. the bizarre murders. they're almost like theme parties and i'm a sucker for themes. they're very over-the-top and bizarre and just have a circus-y feel to all of them.
9. everything. i am absolutely smitten by this show. makes me want to call my mom and tell her i'm in love.

in an attempt to move on and not sink into a my-new-favorite-show-will-never-be-on-tv-again induced bout of depression, i've started watching dead like me. it's also written by Bryan Fuller and pushing daisies was intended to be a spinoff from it. so i figure i'll give it a shot. the worst that could happen is i lose touch with the outside world for another couple of days and forget to brush my teeth.
