my main man hp

might be replaced by cormac mclaggen. . . that finger licking thing he did? dear god. on point.

i have to admit i was disappointed in hp. the preview looked incredible and the midnight hype was there- there were 20-something of us in costume, yelling and clapping before the movie and generally freaking people out. we counted down and everything. but once the actual movie started there were so many WHAT THE FUCK moments when we would just turn to each other, mouths open, shaking our heads. so many things were just wrong.

i understand that the movies aren't going to be exactly like the books. there are obviously things that just wouldn't translate from page to screen. and i'm usually pretty good at viewing the two as separate entities. but maybe because i just finished re-reading the sixth book or maybe because it was so horribly done, every little thing was bothering me.

first let's talk the actual film part- beautiful shots. glorious. the lighting during the dead dumbledore scenes? heavenly. the sets were intricate and perfect. totally loving it. but the scenes were so short! nothing ever built up to the right level- it was like we were seeing some crazy condensed version. it was just bam bam bam. here. there. here. over there. back here. nuts. too much.

so many little arbitrary things were changed- like luna saving harry on the train instead of tonks. and dumbledore not paralyzing harry when malfoy confronts him in the tower. and then snape talking to harry before killing dumbledore- what was that? that didn't even make sense. harry has a temper and kind of has that whole 'always-wants-to-be-the-hero-thing'- if dumbledore didn't temporarily paralyze him, he totally would have done something.

then there was the romance thing. too much emphasis was placed on it. what's with harry and hermione's friggin heart to hearts? and the whole ginny thing was TOOOOTTTALLLLLYYY off. her feeding him tarts? offering to 'tie his shoe' (we all know where that was going. . .)? kissing him in the fucking room of requirement? where the shit is all of this coming from!

and then there was the whole random ass corn field battle in the middle of the movie! and the burrow catches on fire?!?!? where the hell did that come from? was my copy of the book missing a chapter? and what the hell did that add to the movie? NOTHING! terribbbllleeeeeee.

and they added the whole slughorn hourglass thing and that stupid story about the lily/fish. and the whole, 'harry has a date with a muggle' thing at the beginning. and the 'bellatrix lestrange destroying hogwarts shit' scenw. i'm not a huge fan of the additions, buti generally let it go. whatever. do what you want. but when they leave out vitally important shit in favor of adding more silly or pointless scenes? WHAT THE FUCK. i hulk out over that stuff.

for example: where was the whole back story on tom riddle? there was so much left out of that. including the fact that the horcruxes were going to be like 'trophies' or have some significance to tom. in the movie, dumbledore says 'they can be any ordinary object' which is the TOTAL opposite of what he says in the book, when he projects that the horcruxes will most likely be things that are symbolic and of great value to voldemort. and where was rufus scrimengeour? and the back story on fenrir? and the whole tension thing between lupin and tonks (out of nowhere they were just a couple! wtf!)? what the hell happened to the final battle scene? where was the obsession and paranoia harry felt towards malfoy, which was a huge part of the book? and where was the bond between harry and dumbledore? i have to be honest in saying that the actor playing dumbledore is not my favorite. dumbledore is supposed to be whimsical, somewhat other wordly- whenever i read about him, i feel like he knows more than everyone else, like he can see a much bigger picture. there's supposed to be a twinkle in his eye! this dumbledore just always seems cryptic and grumpy! the relationship between dumbledore and harry is central to this book- dumbledore is harry's last real parental figure and losing him is a huge blow and really sets him up for the whole independence theme throughout the final book. but none of the bond or even the sadness of losing dumbledore was conveyed properly in the movie. i wasn't even that sad when he died on screen- i bawled when i read about it though. and i think that was a major fault of the whole film- i wasn't into it. nothing drew me in. the harry potter series has the power to suck you into a whole other world. when i read those books, i totally forget about everything else- i'm so invested in the characters and the story. but this movie did nothing for me. i wasn't captivated at all.

i have really high standards for these films, and rightfully so i think. harry potter is just a whole other realm of fandom. you feel like you know these characters. and for them to go and royally screw up something on this kind of level was just painful. i was seriously disappointed.

at the end of the movie, the rest of the theatre clapped and my group of friends just sat in silence. we sat for about a minute, just blankly staring before the raging began. we raged about that movie all the way out of the theater, all the way to matt's house, and then for two hours at the house before we passed out around 5:30.

on a happier note: i did enjoy the scene with harry on the luck potion. it was like watching drunk harry. i think felix felicis is really just a shot of strong whiskey. i also enjoyed ron under the spell of the love potion. there were some genuinely funny parts in the movie. and the food matt made for the after party was banging. the after party in general was banging. and my friends are banging. there is nothing like having heated harry potter discussions in full costume while the sun comes up.it's absolutely glorious.

frocup

'frocup' came up as a word confirmation today. seriously, who comes up with these? is it just a random computer thing? because if they're actually paying someone to come up with words to put in crazy wavy text, i would like to be that person. send me an application. sign me up.

i went shopping for my hp costume this morning at salvation army. bought a new tie and velvet-y vest. i think i'm just going to go as hermione. mostly because i mended my house elf and i want to hand out spew badges again. (i felt so popular when i handed them out at the book release- entire gaggles of twelve year olds were coming up to me asking for them. it was like i was the cool popular kid. only instead of money and a hair straightener, i had a stuffed house elf and buttons. sigh. only in the land of hp fandom. it's a thing of beauty.)

while at salvation army, i also found a sweet new photo album (i've been collecting them and putting my pictures in them. i figure by the time i get my own place, i'll have enough that i can fill a whole shelf with them. scenic old school albums with pictures only found in their physical form. i like it.) and a yellow mug with birds on it (sucker for mugs. and birds). AND i swear, the thrifting gods have a crush on me or something, because they sent me the best valentine ever today in the form of an embossed corderoy skirt (it gets better) that is the EXACT one i was looking at in pittsburgh but decided not to buy. AND this one was only $2.99! which is cheaper than $10.00! by $7.01! i owe them a big sloppy metaphorical kiss.

i also worked with a new girl at the beanery today. we started off a little rocky and awkward- and by rocky and awkward, i mean that she had an attitude and i was scared of her. but she warmed up to me and we ended up talking the entire shift. she's this tiny little girl, straight hair, really pretty but she's (as she put it) "a popular tough ghetto bitch". she has a one-year old daugher, did time in juvy (juvie? juvvy? she was in kid jail) for getting in a fight with her mom, she has all kinds of drama in her life- just so many things. she's definitely sassy (and by sassy i mean if you disrespect her, she will call you out, then call you names that would make a sailor blush, all while taking out her earrings and removing her shoes so she can beat the shit out of you) but she's also really sweet. if you're nice to her, she's nice to you and by the end of the shift i really liked her. maybe i can be part of her posse. i can hold her earrings. and her baby. while she's pulverizing people who look at her the wrong way.

used to be one of the rotten ones and i liked you for that

forget about yourself and all your plans

so many good things. i love spontaneous trips to pittsburgh. we got in around midnight on tuesday and just bummed around eric's brother's house, drinking sangria and beer, discussing harry potter, beating each other up, and watching the great mouse detective. pretty typical stuff. (i have some incredible video footage of the evening that i may share at some point in the future. seriously- the things my friends say. ridiculous.) the next day we explored squirrel hill (the section of pittsburgh where eric's brother, andrew, lives). we went to jerry's records which is like, the promised land of vinyl. seriously. it's just a massive room full of records- all over the place. from floor to ceiling. we spent such a long time in there and i ended up buying a parliment record (the sleeve is shown in the second picture- so good!), the best of ottis redding (it has 'try a little tenderness' which just reminds me of that scene in pretty in pink where ducky sings it in the store. it's one of my all time favorite movie scenes and i couldn't pass up the chance to own it on record), and don pablo's animals which is a rap cover of the doobie brother's song long train running. i know. so good. then we went to the store and bought supplies to make lasagna. delicious! then liz's friend neils and eric's girlfriend andrea came over and we all went to the park to hookah. i got a thousand bug bites but it was a very nice night. came home and anna and i made up new drinking games (how many cards can you stick to your lips? how many cards can you put between your teeth? spelling really hard words from andrew's mathmatics books. is jesus facing you or me? (i have jesus playing cards) drink when you're thirsty! build a house of cards on anna's face!) while everyone else played mario party. then we tried to catch a cat outside but ended up playing invisible wiffleball which later turned into sit in caitlin's car listening to music and singing along. woke up today and went to avalon exchange which is a really sweet exchange shop. i bought a white embroidered peasant blouse and a black dress which i'm in love with (thank you liz for finding it). we also got delicious cupcakes from dozen- red velvet on wednesday and peanut butter pretzel today. eric showed us the candy store with a secret porn section. we explored a tea shop and ate bagels at the bagel factory. talked about the future all the way home. that's four hours. i love talking about the future. and the scenery was perfect! it was a perfect trip! i love my friends. more stories and better stories to come when i'm not so sleepy.

park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me

love this song.

dear france,
i love what you're doing with your vanilla. keep it up.
love,
caitlin

in other news, there is no other news!
i have off tomorrow after two days of double shifts and i've decided i'm going to do everything and anything i want and absolutely nothing that i need to do. this includes sewing. latch hook, visiting my grandparents, trying a new recipe and reading. this excludes cleaning my room.

i've also added "forming educated opinions on government and politics" to my list of things to do this summer. i just read a very good book and have become inspired. i want to be informed! i want to have my own opinions and facts to back them up. i want these opinions to be based on logic and rooted in reality as opposed to idealism and things 'feeling good.' imma be a grown-up! yes yes yes!

letters i need to write. but i don't have the appropriate addresses.

dear chocolate world;
the only thing i love more than working on fourth of july is getting to work and finding out that my shift doesn't end at 10, like you told me online, but ends at 11. it's these little surprises in our relationship that keep things fresh. and because i get out at 11, right after the huge fireworks display at hershey park, i get to spend time, sitting in tourist traffic, really thinking about how much i loathe you. in conclusion: a major fuck you. from me. to you.

love,
caitlin

p.s. thanks for the raffle ticket! it's way better than getting paid time and a half or getting a free meal like we normally do!

dear milton hershey;
i'm sorry about that letter to chocolate world. you know it's nothing against you. you were (are?) an incredible man. i admire you greatly. mad props. much love.
caitlin

dear new york;
do me a favor- keep all your people within your state boundries. except keiran. she can come visit. but the rest of them? make sure they stay where they are. whatever you do, make the fuck sure they don't ever get to hershey pennsylvania. i have had my fair share of being bitched at in a new york accent; i don't think i can handle any more. thanks.
love,
caitlin

and may your wishes all be simple

several orders of business:
1. i got my hp ticket! now i have to work out my costume. i'm torn. on one hand, i just want to be hermione because i have the robe (and i never get to wear it- and it's really nice. lined. with a hood. thick material. beautiful stuff) and never has there ever in the history of media been a character with bushy brown hair. so i feel like i should take advantage of it. on the other hand, i feel like getting creative (all my friends are going pretty hard this year). if i go the creative route, i'm either going to be sirius black's mother's portrait (and pretty much just scream at people) or rufus scrimgeour (my brother has a lion costume so i would just wear that with my robes.) the real shame is the fact that i have to choose just one costume. maybe i'll do costume changes. or invent holidays so i can dress up like a wizard more often.
2. i wore something that wasn't jeans and a t-shirt! it was a t-shirt and my mom's old striped skirt from the limited with my grandma's old belt! look at me go!
3. today's salvation army haul looks great in pictures (and in real life). inventory: one black and white short sleeved, button front dress with pockets (yes!); one multi-colored houndstooth pencil skirt; one pixelated floral skirt that needs to be hemmed a bit but has pockets (yes! yes!); one floral button front skirt with a certain 1950's flair; set of four glasses featuring a jockey and horse; one pyrex orange juice jug. beautiful day.
4. friendship bread is so fucking good. i can't stop eating it.

also:
i always associate summer with america. i think summer is the most american season. maybe it's because of the fourth of july, but everything i associate with summer i associate with american. i even feel more patriotic.
